This post is titled "finding courage", because there exists courage and it is ready to be found.
You see, courage is all around us and sometimes we are the only thing stopping us from living up to our full potential. Once you make up your mind to be brave and to "just go for it" things really aren't so scary you will find.
Fear is so annoying! If it weren't a necessary part of life, I am convinced that it wouldn't exist. This semester I feel like I have been living (or hiding) my life in fear. Afraid to graduate. Afraid to get sick again. Afraid to have another heartbreak. Afraid of missing out (FOMO is a real thing!!) Afraid of committing to a job. Afraid of not finding a job to commit to. Simply afraid.
And guess what? Last week I decided that was enough!
No. More. Fear.
Or, more accurately, don't let fear take over. Yeah, that sounds more like it.
Last week as you have probably seen in my recent post, it felt like the weight of the world came crashing down on me. I am realizing that I am graduating college, from a school I love, in a job that I love, and this chapter of my life is closing. Scary stuff. I felt a sudden urgency to have my whole life planned out. Ha! I don't think that we will ever see the end from the beginning. Baby steps, am I right?
At the beginning of this week I committed to not let fear take over anymore! That thing that has been scaring you to do (is it a good thing?) then go do it!!! Go talk to that person, compliment them, apply to that job and the one over there, consider moving and also consider staying, try new foods (you may get sick) but it has happened before and you always bounce back, open up your heart once again, and learn to enjoy the journey along the way.
Sometimes people tell me I'm courageous. And I think to myself that there are a lot of things that scare me. What makes me brave is doing those things that scare me (and there are a lot). My diagnosis of Crohn's Disease in 2012 was downright scary and because of that it has opened up my world to an opportunity for courage. This is my obstacle I have for life and I am courageously taking on life one day at a time. Because I have gone through this really hard obstacle, it reminds me that I can overcome other obstacles too. Like graduation and scary adult stuff. Yeah.
And now back to you. What scares you? Probably a lot. And that is good because it means that you have a lot of opportunity all around you to find courage! Next time you are scared of anything, think to yourself of a huge obstacle you have overcome or still face today. Think how good and accomplished you feel for facing what you have. And use that confidence to find courage.
Life is good my friends!

Camille, this perspective is very needed, and I love your go-get-em attitude towards our process of overcoming. I agree that Courage is not the absence of fear, courage is feeling the fear and acting in spite of it. My fear is nothing when I decide to act on faith.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Jessica! I like what you said about "my fear is nothing when I decide to act on faith!" What a great example you are as well! :)
